Planning Ahead: How to prepare for Nursing School

The nursing profession requires a well rounded education. Admission to most schools can be highly competitive. Not only are math and science important to study but good communication skills and an understanding of people from many different backgrounds and cultures are also needed.

A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 to 4.0 is required to gain admission to most nursing schools. All admission requirements vary, so check with the school you are interested in for their specific requirements.

Recommended High School Courses:

English - 4 years
Verbal and written communication skills are essential. Recommended courses: Composition, English Literature, American Literature, World Literature, Writing, Speech.

Math - 2 to 4 years
Algebra is necessary for success in chemistry and medication administration, geometry for problem-solving skills.

Science - 2 to 4 years
Chemistry is essential. Biology important, physics recommended, computer science helpful.

Social Studies - 3 to 4 years
Psychology is important. Sociology, history, geography, government, civics, economics are all recommended.

Foreign Language - 2 to 3 years
Highly recommended. This varies among individual nursing schools and also your geographic area.
