Disaster Preparedness and Response for Nurses
The American Red Cross Office of the Chief Nurse has collaborated with Sigma Theta Tau (www.nursingsociety.org), the international honor society of nursing, to develop an online continuing education offering. Available at no cost to nurses, this offering is designed to provide nurses with an overview of their role in responding to a weapons of mass destruction/ terrorism (WMD/T) event or other disaster. While it is not a replacement for Red Cross disaster health services training, it is an excellent way to expand the visibility of Red Cross nurses, as well as to increase the awareness of the importance of nurses in disaster preparedness and response. Home Study RN Refresher Course
The home study RN Refresher Course offered by the Washington State University meets the requirements for reentry into nursing practice in Washington, Alaska, and Idaho. The course includes a review of medical surgical nursing, pharmacology, health assessment and a skills review. The clinical experience is offered in the area where the nurse lives to prepare for a smooth transition into a nursing position at the conclusion of the course. Drug Impairment Awareness Training
Date: August 22 - December 27 2007; Location: AZ Dept of Education and various locations. 4205 N Central. The Arizona Department of Education: Health and Nutrition Services is offering Drug Impairment Awareness Training. This program provides information and hands-on training in the various objective physical testing/assessment that can be performed to determine level of drug impariment and category of drug involved. Arizona Healthcare Leadership Academy
Date: January 23 - March 5 2008; Location: St. Joseph's Hospital & Medical Center. Participants will typically be first-line supervisors in the nursing profession but may also include others from within the healthcare field. Nurses Lobby Day
Tuesday February 5 2008, 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Location: Arizona State Capitol, 1700 W. Washington, Phoenix, Grand Canyon Room. Nurses Lobby Day is for all nurses. It is a perfect opportunity to advocate for issues impacting nursing practice and the healthcare of all Arizonans. Prior to conversing with legislators, participants will receive tips on lobbying and other information necessary to make Lobby Day a success. Build new skills and "lobby-on-the-fly". You will be paired with seasoned nurse lobbyists in small groups. This program is approved for nursing continuing education contact hours by the Arizona Nurses Association an accredited provider by the American Nurses Credential Center. The registration for AzNA members is $70 and non-members is $95. An online registration form will be available in early December. Brochures will be mailed to AzNA members at about the same time.

In conjunction with the Department of Nursing, Continuing Education at BYU-Idaho offers an alternate track for students who are interested in obtaining an Associate of Science in Nursing. Oregon Nurses Association offers the following 2 Continuing Competency Education for Nurses programs to nurses around the state.
New Standards for Nurse Staffing
This 8-hour continuing education offering will focus on building competency of direct care nurses (staff registered nurses), nurse managers, department directors, and nurse executives in nurse staffing. The class focuses on key elements of the 2001 and 2005 laws about nurse staffing in acute care facilities in Oregon. This program is approved by ONA's CCEN program for a total of 6.9 contact hours. There is no charge to ONA members; and $85 for non-members. Safe Patient Handling: Implementing a Successful Program
Program management is the foundation of successful safe patient handling programs. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn a practical systematic method of planning, implementing, cost-justifying and evaluating a successful safe lift program for their facility. Pain Management for Nurses
This course meets 6.0 of the 7.0 Pain Management continuing education credits required for RNs and LPNs. OHSU School of Nursing and the OHSU Hospital Patient Care Division have partnered to create an Internet-based Pain Management CE course that meets the Board of Nursing requirements for license renewal for RNs and LPNs. The course can be completed when convenient to you, the registrant! And, you can now register online!

In addition, we are offering 12 special populations modules, which the registrant can select depending on their area(s) of practice.
